About the China Internet User Data Report

Since 1997, the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) has been authorised to conduct the Statistical Survey on Internet Development in China, releasing the China Internet Users data “Report” twice yearly. With 54 reports published to date, it is a crucial reference for policymakers, industry players, scholars, and the public.

Core Information of China Internet User Data

– As of August 2024, China’s netizen population reached 1,099 million, up by 7.42 million from December 2023, with Internet penetration at 78%, an increase of 0.8 percentage points.

– By August 2024, mobile Internet users in China totalled 1,096 million, constituting 99.7% of China’s netizens.

– Urban Internet users numbered 795 million, comprising 72.3% of the national total, while rural Internet users totalled 304 million, representing 27.7%.

– As of August 2024, the percentages of Chinese netizens accessing the Internet via mobile phones, desktop computers, laptop computers, TVs, and tablet computers were 99.7%, 34.2%, 32.4%, 25.2%, and 30.5%, respectively.

– IPv6 addresses increased to 69,080 blocks / 32, a 1.5% rise over December 2023.

– China’s domain names totalled 31.87 million by June 2024.

– Instant messaging users in China reached 1.08 billion by June 2024, up 18.24 million from December 2023, constituting 98% of the national total.

– The user size of online video in China hit 1.07 billion by June 2024, up 12.5 million from December 2023, with short video users numbering 1.05 billion, constituting 95.5% of China’s netizens.

– Online payment users in China totalled 969 million by June 2024, up 14.98 million from December 2023, accounting for 88.1% of the national total.

– Online shopping users in China reached 905 million by June 2024, comprising 82.3% of all Internet users.

– The number of search engine users in China was 824 million by June 2024, representing 75.0% of all netizens.

– Live streaming users in China totalled 777 million by June 2023, accounting for 70.6% of all Internet users.

– Online music users in China numbered 729 million by June 2023, up 14.5 million from December 2023, making up 66.3% of all Internet users.

– Online literature users in China reached 516 million by June 2023, comprising 46.9% of all Internet users.

– By June 2024, online meal ordering users in China reached 553 million, marking an increase of 8.5 million from December 2023, representing 50.3% of the total netizen population.

– The user base of online car-hailing services in China reached 503 million by June 2024, comprising 45.2% of all Internet users.

– Online travel booking services in China had a user base of 365 million by June 2024, accounting for 33.2% of all Internet users.
